Psoas Reset – Muscle Of The Soul (Non-Reactive)

The psoas muscle, located along the spine is a deep-seated muscle located in the lower back, connecting the spine to the pelvis and at the top of the femur bone, is often referred to as the “muscle of the soul.” This is because it can hold a profound connection to our emotional well-being, physical health and the body’s response to trauma. It. While its primary function is to stabilise the hips and spine, its significance extends far beyond physical movement.

This muscle has a unique ability to retain emotional energy. It is believed that when we experience intense emotions, such as trauma, fear, or anxiety, the psoas muscle contracts and holds onto that energy. This can lead to chronic tension and pain in the lower back, hips, and abdomen.

Furthermore, the psoas muscle is closely linked to our nervous system. It is innervated by the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our fight-or-flight response. When we are under stress, the sympathetic nervous system activates, causing the psoas muscle to tighten. This can lead to a cycle of chronic stress and tension in the body.

However, the psoas muscle is not just a reservoir of emotional energy. It also has the potential to be a source of healing and transformation. When we engage in practices that promote relaxation and mindfulness, such as yoga, meditation, or somatic therapy, we can release the tension held in the psoas muscle helping us to reset its proper function. This can lead to a profound sense of emotional healing and liberation.

This simple exercise ‘Psoas Reset Non-Reactivty’ can have a profound impact on the psoas, we recommend that you practise it often especially when you are feeling anxious or anytime after a period of heavy activity.

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet parallel to each other, positioned the width apart of the front of your hip sockets. Keep your heels about 12-16 inches away from your buttocks. Your trunk and head should be parallel to the floor. If not, place a folded, flat towel under your head.

Do not push your lower back to the floor or tuck your pelvis under. Try to keep your arms below shoulder height, letting them rest over the ribcage, to the sides of your body, or on your belly.

In this simple position, gravity releases the psoas, and you’ll feel more at peace with yourself and the world. There is nothing to do in this position; this is a practice of ‘being’.
